If I could name one person whose style of cooking feels most comfortable and comforting to me, I think it would be Heidi Swanson, creator of the recipe journal blog 101 Cookbooks. If I could name one person whose style of cooking greatly inspires me, it would also be Heidi Swanson.
Heidi manages to strike the sweet spot of a healthful approach to food, one that features whole grains and greens and dishes that make you feel good, but also an intriguing use of ingredients, an inventive and playful way of looking at food and flavor. Healthful and flavorful is not always an easy thing to pull off, but Heidi does it.
Like Christina Choi, whose Nettletown restaurant I so love, Heidi’s food manages to be homey and comforting, yet unlike anything I’ve tasted or even conceived of before. This is my favorite combination—food that’s good for me but also exciting and flavorful, new and inventive yet comforting and delicious.
I have by no means cooked my way through Heidi’s entire site (the archives go back to 2003), but a number of her dishes have become such a part of my cooking repertoire that I make them now by memory, without consulting recipe or ingredients. I’m not sure I want to go through a winter without her lentil soup with kale and poached egg, or the homemade Big Sur Powerbars I stir up with my niecelets in the summer and send to people as care packages. Heidi’s cooking has blended easily into my life and made it more delicious.
So you can imagine I was excited when I heard her new cookbook was coming out. I had enjoyed the book she published in 2007—Super Natural Cooking—both as a resource and as a thing of beauty (I had been tempted to keep it displayed open face on my mantle piece at the time, it was that pretty). And you know what, I think the new book is even better.
I should say here that I consider Heidi a friend. We share not only a similar approach to cooking, but also Northern California childhoods and a deep love for the city of San Francisco and the gorgeous coast, farms, and seasonal produce of the area. I’d be well disposed to like this new book of hers regardless. I expected that I would.
What I hadn’t expected was to be surprised by it—but the number of recipes, by the heft and quality of it, but the full-page matte photos and beautiful design. This is one gorgeous book, and I’m not the only one to think so. Heidi’s Super Natural Every Day recently debuted at number six on the New York Times’ bestseller list. I couldn’t be happier for my friend.
The only thing that makes me at all unhappy, is that my copy arrived just before I left town for a month of travel in which I was not going to have regular access to a kitchen. There I was pouring over recipes for chanterelle mushroom tacos and rye flour crepes and I didn’t have time to make them (dagnabbit). I cannot tell you how excited I am to get home so I can get cracking on these recipes.
I’ve already read through the book, more than once, and I love how Heidi calmly leads the reader through her philosophy and kitchen, through the inspiration she finds at the farmers’ market and from the seasonal flavors of this special place we both call home (only Heidi still lives there, and I do not).
These are images of some of the recipes I am most looking forward to trying out, so you can get a sense of Heidi’s playful and practical bent—this is real food, healthful even, but it is also full of flavor and personality and color and creativity. This is a book you would not be disappointed by (even if all you do is prop it on the mantelpiece and admire the photography).
Because I want to support my friend, I’m giving away a copy of Super Natural Every Day. Leave a comment if you would like to be considered in the giveaway. And for more about the book, and a few sample recipes, take a look at Heidi’s site. I always find myself inspired there. I think you might be too.
And for those of us lucky Northwesterners, Heidi is coming to do book events in Portland and Seattle. The schedule is below.
Portland, April 29th, with Kim Boyce

I’m a fan of her site, and I’d love to read the book.
I’d love this book!
Would love to be entered in the giveway, this looks great!
I have Heidi’s first book and have been drooling over all of the blogs that feature her new one. I so want to get this book!
ooo. the book looks amazing!
Would love a copy. Her blog is so great!
I have Super Natural Cooking and I absolutely love it! As you noted, it is both beautiful and inspiring. I would love a copy of Super Natural Every Day based on what you’ve said and based on the gorgeous photos I see above! Thanks for having this giveaway.
I keep hearing delicious things about Heidi’s new cookbook and would love a chance to win it!
Rye crepes! yummmmm I added it to my book list!
Can’t wait to get a look at the book! Thanks!
I got Super Natural Cooking years ago as a present and it has definitely influenced my cooking. I’d love to try Heidi’s new project!
I would love a copy of this book! I’m just addicted to her coconut red lentil soup and even even my coconut milk-hating, anything-without-garlic-doubting husband was won over. 101 Cookbooks is my go-to recipe blog. I’ve bee admiring Super Natural Every Day in the bookstores (and sometimes doing some rearranging to make it more obvious to other people), but am a little too tight on cash right now to buy my own.
I would love to be considered for this giveaway. I am trying to learn how to eat more healthfully, and I think this book would be of great inspiration. Thanks for the chance!
What a thoughtful review and generous giveaway! I have 101 Cookbooks bookmarked on my Reader and have made more of Heidi’s recipes than I can count. I would absolutely love to be entered in the drawing for a copy of her new cookbook!
I would love to win a copy of this – some of our favorite, most reliable recipes came from 101 Cookbooks.
I would love to win a cookbook! I’m teyingto cook more Heidi style for my kids.
Oh, I’d definitely like a copy of Heidi’s book! I’m a fan of 101 cookbooks and also love her cooking style. It reminds me of how I grew up eating, with my dad cooking lots of healthy veggies.
I’ve been hearing so much about this book — I am intrigued!
I can’t wait to go to Seattle this weekend and see all these beautiful faces and meet all you beautiful fans. This book is the bee’s knees!
Oh my, I would love to receive a copy of this book! I follow Heidi’s blog and adore her recipes.
Here! Here! I count myself as a BIG fan! And the chanterelle tacos are delicious. Made them the day my pre-ordered book came in the mail. The world needs to know that healthy, vegetarian food is not only good for the world and your body, ut it’s also delicious. Heidi is a goddess in my book.
I would love to be gifted a copy of Heidi’s book–her site never fails to get me in the kitchen (the lively lentil soup, her otsu, buttermilk farro salad, peanut butter cookies), and the new book looks amazing.
I totally need this book! Everything I’ve seen so far looks amazing!
I love 101 Cookbooks! Hopefully I can make it out to see her on the 30th. Thanks for sharing!
I’d love to win a copy of this book. I’ve tried a recipe already (through Sprouted Kitchen) and loved it. I’d love to have my own copy to cook from and drool over.
Oh, I have been drooling over this book for a week now! (did i see a Ravioli salad? be still my heart!)
Yes, and it looks gorgeous!
I love Heidi’s recipes. They’re both good for you and just plain good, which is a novel concept!
I have heard good things about this book *everywhere* and must check it out!
This does look like a lovely book – and I’m a sucker for cookbooks. The recipes sound intriguing – are they all vegetarian?
Yep, all the recipes are vegetarian. I love that–accessible and good for everyone (well, except for vegans, who would have to modify).
I absolutely love Heidi’s new book, too. I already have a copy, and just bought another two for friends. It’s beautiful, and earthy and refined all at once. Enjoy your travels!
I’d love to have a copy – if I don’t win, I’ll buy it! I think I’d be a good recipient because my cooking, while delicious and often fun, could use a new slant, especially in new ways to use veggies and whole grains and use less meat. I live in the Bay area, too, so her ingredients will be available to me. Choose me, please, please, please!
I love Heidi’s cooking. I often turn to her recipes when cooking. I am eager to buy her new cookbook.
I would like to be considered for the book, please.
i too an comforted and inspired by heidi’s blog and her recipes. i cannot wait to see her cookbook achievement. having said that, i too am comforted and inspired by your writing. pls don’t stop. and i’m not just saying that b/c i could possibly win a cookbook. i’m saying it b/c sometimes we need encouragement and courage and also to give ourselves a break when we can be critical and i often find myself turning to your entries, especially when life seem craziest. thank you for sharing yourself.
How sweet you are! Thanks so much for the kind words. It’s lovely to know the posts are helpful in hard times. That makes me very happy
i’d love to win it! i’ve been eyeing it for some time now and it looks amazing!
If I could use my spoon to eat out of the pictures…I would! YUM
Hooray! Thank you for posting this. I have been so drawn to this cookbook each time I see a blurb about it somewhere, and now I can see why. Beautiful. Can’t wait!
Hi Tea,
I’ve been following both your blog and Heidi’s blog for a while now, and I have to say I enjoy both very much. I love your writing voice, it’s very thoughtful and genuine, and I’ve often found inspiration from your site (your words inspire me so much that I bought a bottle of ume vinegar to try on my salad after your post about it, even though I don’t like ume, because your description was so convincing!) I always look forward to your new posts
Annie
Thanks so much for the kind words, Annie, very nice of you to say (and of course very nice to hear:-). I hope you liked the ume vinegar. I’m a salt/sour fiend, so I love that stuff.
thanks for holding this wonderful giveaway! it’s wonderful to see such support and encouragement in the blogging world. Heidi conveys such simplicity, but also depth in her cooking and recipes. my favorites include her tempeh recipes and her quinoa chocolate chip cloud cookies.
Yum! Thanks for offering a wonderful giveaway.
Hello Tea
I would love to be considered in the giveaway, but would you then consider shipping the book to France?
I was thinking you wouldn’t and hence not posting a comment. It then reminded me of a post of yours a few month ago: you were pointing out this bevahiour that I recognised as mine too, not trying things due to a feeling of unworthiness, due to own certitude of failing.
This post has been in my mind ever since and influenced me in small and big ways all winter.
This comment is one of its onsequences: I am posting it and letting mere practical considerations like postage fees up to you !!!
Hélène
Good for you for asking! If you’re the winner (I use a random number generator to pick), I will honor your gumption (and my own post) and ship the book to you in France
I have already won something: a new word!!! Gumption, mhmmm, had to look this one up and the translation or explanations are not clear enough. Not quite sure how to understand it precisely, guts, courage, common sense?
It’s lovely anyway, I will use it again, thank you !
(Hélène strutting away singsonging “I have gumption, I have gumption, lalala”)
Ha! You just had me laughing in delight at the image of you strutting and singsonging. Perfect!
You’re right, the definition of gumption is a little confusing. I think of it as courage, spunk, guts, and a little resourcefulness. All good things to have!
this book is on my birthday wish list (i always like to buy a new cookbook for my birthday!). i’ve been reading heidi’s site for ages and make many of her recipes often. i’ve got to try that lentil soup soon!
I really like her blog, and the book looks great!!!
What beautiful recipes and such a lovely book. It must be ever so inspiring to read…and very frustrating you don’t have access to the kitchen at the moment to start trying ‘em out!
Happy baking!
Katescakesandbakes
This book looks great!
Those pictures look beautiful – such a tease!
Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
I have that book checked out from the library and would love to own it. I feel very similarly about Heidi’s food and site. The book is making me feel homesick. (I too am a Bay Area native …. currently on the East Coast, and very much missing the farmer’s markets and lovely spots I used to frequent.)
I am a 101cookbooks fan also! It is the first food blog I every made a recipe from.
I am a big fan of her cashew curry.
Heidi’s site is pure inspiration. Your site too, is absolutely wonderful. You’re so generous with sharing your life in words and photographs. Beautiful!
I pick this book up at every bookstore’s bestseller rack and look longingly at it. Her recipes make me miss the west coast and the beautiful bounty of produce!
I would love love love to win a copy of this book! Nobody seems to have a bad word to say about it.
I’ve been eye balling this book since it came out. I fingered through it just the other day at the book store and wanted it so bad! I’ve been thinking about going back to get it, but it sure would be nice to win it instead!!
<3 Heidi's style! Definitely want a copy of this.
This book’s been on my to-read list for a while! I’ve gotten some great recipes from 101 Cookbooks, and it looks like this book is full of dishes I would actually make every day (or close to it). Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
Counting down the days till our Farmer’s Market starts here in the midwest! What a great companion.
my good friend is moving in with her boyfriend, and they’ve been enjoying cooking together, so this new book of Heidi’s is going to be my housewarming gift to them. If I won a copy for myself as well, that would truly be a bonus! For now I just rely on the blog, but to be honest, I like having a cookbook in the kitchen rather than a computer.
This new cookbook looks amazing. And I definitely need to try the lentil soup recipe.
Both of her cookbooks are on my personal wish list!
Those recipes look really good! I’ll look for the book in my local bookstore, since my odds of winning are somewhat slim. But you never know!
I love 101 cookbooks. Heidi’s mix of beautiful photography and food is so inspiring. I’m excited to take a closer look at Super Natural Every Day.
I read about this book and thought it looked good. Your endorsement convinces me that I’d like to own a copy!
I would love this cookbook. The pictures alone are wonderful!
i love heidi’s books! i would love to win it–if i do, i will take the copy i would have bought for myself and give it as a gift!
I’ll remove myself from the giveaway as I already have a copy of the book but just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of WOW, what a gorgeous, gorgeous book. I also feel as you do — the recipes are inspiring, interesting, yet also comforting. And what a treat to eat delicious food that’s also good FOR you. I did a riff on the little quinoa cakes last night and those will definitely be made again, and again, and again … Honestly I kind of want to sleep with this cookbook under my pillow, it’s that good.
I keep promising myself I wont buy any more cookbooks until I’ve cooked more from the ones I already have, but I think I have to break my promise for this one! Just yummy!
It does look lovely. I’m already on the waiting list at the library to browse it. I’ve enjoyed so many of her recipes for so many years now.
I would love to check out Heidi’s new book. I’ve recently started reading her blog (and yours) and have yet to try any of her recipes. The way you describe them, I need to!
This looks like a beautiful book. I’d love to have it.
I’ve been dying to get my hands on Super Natural Every Day, but have been waiting for Mothers Day in hopes maybe I’ll get a bookstore gift card – so I can run out and get it. Wouldn’t it be cool if I didn’t have to wait that long? I’m even more impressed to get my hands on the book after your fine review! Cheers~
With such a glowing, and lovely written review, how could I not want to check out one of her cookbooks?!
I would love to win this book. The recipes look really good, and they would also cause me to try some new things.
I’ve been following her website as long as yours probably! I’d love to have her book! Thank you for the chance!
I’d love this book!!!!
I just discovered your website yesterday and now there’s a giveaway! I like it here! Heidi’s book looks amazing.
I would love to cook my way through Heidi’s new book! I’ve enjoyed following her blog for the last few years and would love to see her published work.
I’ve been hearing nothing but wonderful things about this book – I’d love to have it! If I don’t win, I think I might have to get it!
Oh I would love to have this!
I love Heidi’s site, and I can’t wait to try out the book!
Wow, you’ve totally sold me! And I’m definitely checking out that power bar recipe.
can’t wait to try the macaroon tart!
Heidi’s cookbook looks wonderful. I just tried her oatmeal soda bread and fell in love.
I’ve been holding out on buying the book until this Friday’s signing in Portland. I love Heidi’s blog and I’m so eager to get this book and if I win I’ll get to give it to a lucky someone! Thanks for featuring Heidi and her fabulously, creative and delicious work.
I’d love to win this cookbook. Photos of recipes are yummy looking. Thanks for the heads up. Stephanie
Wow, a feast for the eyes and belly! My favorite kind of cookbook!
I could use some inspiration for more healthful meals. Would love to have this book. Thank you!

A copy of the book would be a treasured addition to my collection..
I’ve been a fan of her Web site for a long time and would love to win a copy of her new cookbook!
This is my ideal cookbook; one that combines healthy food with delicious and interesting flavours!! Would love to add it to my collection!!
I love healthful cooking; it is the taste of my childhood
To have a cookbook where I can introduce healthful, tasty food to others in my life would be wonderful!
Sounds like it’s right up my alley! Heading over to peruse her blog next.
That looks like a beautiful book. If I am not lucky enough to win it here, it is definitely getting added to my wishlist. Thanks for hosting the giveaway.
Wow – She even makes raw tempeh look alluring with her photos. I have 101 Cookbooks bookmarked on my computer, but like others, I would rather use a cookbook than a laptop in the kitchen. Thank you for being so generous to share a cookbook, support your friend and turn more of your readers into Heidi’s fans.
I have read so many blogs raving about Heidi’s new book and I can’t wait to get on the bandwagon – if I don’t win this giveaway, I’ll probably buy it myself!
This cookbook has been at the top of my wish list–I would love to be entered for this giveaway!
It’s so weird! I’ve been hearing about Heidi’s book for the past month, but I haven’t found it at the bookstore… I’d love to take a closer peak at it!
I’d love a copy!
I always think I will not need to have another cookbook until I see the next one that I just must have. Would love to win this book. Her website is beautiful.
I’d love to have a copy to give to a friend! I already purchased mine.
I’d love to receive the book that I’ve been hearing so much about.
Can’t wait to read Heidi’s new cookbook. It looks awesome.

Thank you for hosting this give-away. I had not heard of her over here in The Netherlands, but from what I’ve seen here I would love to win this. I’m trying hard to change my lifestyle (especially the bad eating habbits) and this book seems perfect to help me with it.
kindest regards
Brigitta
I’m a huge fan of Heidi Swanson, too! I started a food blog at the beginning of this year and have already made several of her recipes that I found on her 101 Cookbooks website. She’s opened my eyes to so many new ingredients I’d never cooked with before (hello Brown Rice Syrup and Lentils…I’m talking to you!). I would love to have a whole cookbook of hers to play from. Love your site by the way!!
I love Heidi’s site! So gorgeous. I’d love her book, too, if I happened to win.
I would love to win this book! I adore Heidi’s blog, and our site posted about her free pdf a few weeks ago. Everything I’ve ever made from 101 Cookbooks tastes delicious and makes you feel GOOD.

This book looks fab! I would love a copy. PLease count me in for the WIN. By the way, I also really enjoyed your book, The Butcher and The Vegetarian. I’ve recomended it to many friends & family as it was a real eye opener.
All the best.
I love Heidi’s blog, it was one of the first ever food blogs I started reading a few years back and I would love to be entered to win her new book, it looks lovely.

I’m a huge fan of her blog and hope to check out the book soon too.
I don’t need any more cookbooks… except this one! Love your blog!
Would love to have a copy of this!
This book looks fabulous!
However will you pick a winner! I hope it’s ME. (or is it “I”?) By the way, I always enjoyed following you on Twitter, and I can no longer access that. Why?? Thanks!
Hmm, not sure why you should have a problem following me on Twitter (though sometimes all of Twitter is wonky). Can you find my profile through this link? I know Twitter has accidently unfollowed a few people on my behalf.
http://twitter.com/tea_austen
Also, my inner editor wants you to know that it’s “me” and not “I”
http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/between-you-and-me.aspx
I recently discovered Heidi’s website. I would love the opportunity to own a copy of her book of delicious recipes!

Im a very big fan of Heidi…wish I get a copy of this book…:-)
would like to get the book,
I would love to have a chance to win this book.
GHeidi has been an inspiration to so many of us food bloggers. We are a bit more who we are because she is who she is and shares so much with the rest of us.
I guess the key reasons I am swooing over this book are in the title itself: 4 words:
1) super > above, and beyond
2) natural > healthy, good, real, seasonal, local food
3) every > the consistency, the continuous good work, the perfect reference
4) day > the magic of the quotidian
love her site (and yours!) and loved her first book (and yours!) so enter me in to win a copy
Want to win a copy of this book .. looks awesome!!
Thanks for hosting this giveaway! I normally don’t really like buying cookbooks, but since so many of the food bloggers I trust are really praising this one, I’m quite intrigued.
love her site and cookbooks. thanks.
I would love to throw my hat into the ring for this giveaway. I have been reading Heidi’s website for years and love her effortless approach to eating sensibly and seasonally.
Would love to win her book!
Would love a copy of the book.
I’m on a mission these days to eat WHOLE and healthy foods, so this book would be so inspiring. I’m glad I came across your blog today–it’s inspiring, too!
Oh me, me! Gorgeous.
Ooooh. Yes please.
Not only would I love this book, it would be good for me, as I’ve lately fallen into a rut of making the same simple boring foods over and over, because I cook only for me. Fingers crossed!
hi tea!101 cookbooks is one of the sites i visit on a regular basis- would luuuuuuv the book. thanks for sharing!best, anja xx
I’d love a copy of this book to have a go-to for great healthy recipes!
I loved her first book, too, and am very excited for this one. I would love to win a copy. Her site is a constant source of inspiration – have you tried her Amazing Black Bean Brownies? They are one of my favorite things ever!
I’ve heard so many great things about this book, and I’ve also been a longtime fan of her site–perfect for healthy and tasty meals.
This morning I got so distracted, I didn’t get past reading your first post, but as always, I wandered my way back to your blog. I am fascinated by some of the recipes by Heidi Swanson and I want to leap up and start cooking one of them!
This book looks amazing! I’m in a cooking rut so would greatly enjoying winning it.
That looks like such a beautiful and practical cookbook! I’d love to get my hands on a copy.
Thank for this generous offer. I would be thrilled to own this book-it looks amazing. I am in Canada but since you will ship to France…….:-)
I’d love a copy of this gorgeous cookbook!
ditto that! i’ve read through my copy a half-dozen times already, and could pretty much pick any page blindly and be happy. what a book. what a gal.
tara, please give heidi a double thumbs-up for me, would you? she’s been rocking my world for the better part of seven years.
… Am on the hold list at the library for the book but would love a copy for myself – thank you for offering it – your book was also good reading.
I love 101 cookbooks and would love a copy of this book!
I swear by Heidi’s Chickpeas en Fuego. Changed my life, it did! Ok it didn’t, but it did get me tons and tons of compliments from friends and friends of friends. It’s all so simple to do. I love that about her recipes!
(I know it’s a random pick but a girl can hope.)
Thanks for the awesome giveaway Tea. Wouldn’t it be just too cool if I won a book written by one of the first awesome food bloggers, given away on the first (also awesome) food blog I ever read? I think so
I’d love a copy!
I’ve made that lentil soup recipe too, on multiple occasions–delicious
My library doesn’t have her books–I’d love to win this one!
Great chance! Thank you.
I have enjoyed all the recipes I’ve tried of Heidi’s. I love to eat healthfully but am not always creative about it, so I love how she makes eating healthfully fun. And it doesn’t always seem like I am “eating healthfully”, either.
I would love a copy of this book! Thanks, Tea.
Heidi is inspirational to me in so many (food) ways. I find myself cooking healthier and better than ever before. Down to earth and just good food…. I would love to win a copy of Heidi’s new cook book.
Thanks so much!
I am probably too late but I love 100 Cookbooks and bought her first cookbook as a gift for a dear friend. I can’t wait to see the new one!
I would love to own a copy of this book, though I have got it availed it at my library.
I also wish her to come and do an author talk at my library.
Please…let me win the copy…crossing my fingers.
Heidi Swanson is an inspiration in the kitchen. I’d love to win a copy of what I’ve heard is one of the best books out this year.
I first read your fragile piece on grief. You express a universal sentiment…a part of the everyday, yet an experience that changes the landscape of our lives abruptly, violently, absolutely. We are forever changed. I am sorry for your loss.
The gorgeous cookbook pales in comparison, doesn’t it? Yet, life goes on, mysteriously and thankfully…
I just happened upon this site, quickly (I had thought) looking for something new to do with broccoli. I read the recipe for chopped raw broccoli salad (which I will definitely make tomorrow!), and I’m still sitting here nearly an hour later. I love the photographs, the captivating writing, and the warm tone of each day’s blog. Like “beautiful” above, I read the article on grief with tears in my eyes, having lost a wonderful mother-in-law a few months ago, and then soon after, my father.
This site will definitely become one of my “Favorite Places.” I’ll be back for recipes and reading. I want to know more about Heidi Swanson and her books!
I think I made a mistake in the previous comment. Since I’m new to the site and saw the name Heidi Swanson a few times, I assumed that was the name of this writer. Now that I’m back on the site (already!), I read about Tara. I have to do a little more reading here to really get acquainted!
No worries, Pat! Very kind of you to come back and correct yourself. Happy to have you here, and thanks so much for the very generous words—they are much appreciated!
