Great article. I think today I am going to have to pick up a few extra things at the grocery store so I can make some waffles myself this week.

They don't screw on, but they have a silicone gasket-y thing that makes it generally air tight. I haven't had a problem with the lids at all, though I mostly store grains and beans in them, so not things that would get quickly stale. I did have an unfortunate bug infestation once, but it was from pantry items in plastic bags, nothing in jars.

Those cookbooks squeeze out a lot of things. Mine breed in the night, I'm sure of it!

Do the lids screw on? if not, how do you keep the contents from getting stale or buggy?

I'm with you on old houses and tables in the kitchen...I have a circular table with two fold-down leaves butted up against a wall in my kitchen, with one leaf left up. It came from my husband's grandmother's kitchen. There's a small TV, a lamp, a large breadbox, and a basket with all the little things I always need and can never find: Post-Its, small notepads for lists, tape, rulers, thin wire for this and that. I used to have a ratty old armchair in there as well--it was always the favorite seat in the house--but had to give it up for one of those chrome shelving units to accommodate my ever-expanding cookbook collection.

I love that you posted about your new kitchen. There is nothing more exciting about moving to a new place and starting over with a new-to-you cooking space!
I moved in the last few months and am still excited about my new counter space and full wall of shelf space in the pantry!

I can relate to your joy, a friend called my last kitchen a "dark cave." Isn't it amazing how much a different sunshine makes?
Thanks for your kind words!
